TOMMY DUPUIS - Classical Guitarist
Video Recordings
Variations on a Theme
of Sor - Miguel Llobet
This piece was recorded in 2023 with his good friend Michael Gorlin, the sound engineer, in the Peabody Conservatory. This is one of his favourite pieces and he often plays it in concerts to showcase the sometimes surprisingly wide variety of techniques possible on the guitar.
The goal of this production was to create a recording with no edition, no post-production, and no effects; only a hall, microphones, and a guitar.
Suite Espanola no.1, Granada - Isaac Albéniz. Transc. Manuel Barrueco
In this piece played in a concert in Port-Cartier, Quebec, in 2024, the guitarist Tommy Dupuis presents the appropriator side of the guitar. A big chunk of the classical guitar repertoire is made up of arrangements of pieces originally written for other instruments. Granada is a great example, a piano piece beautifuly arranged for the guitar by his teacher Manuel Barrueco.
Hika by Leo Brouwer
A long time favourite of Tommy Dupuis's repertoire, Hika by Leo Brouwer showcases amazingly the unique hability of the guitar to recreate atmospheres and environments with its extensive colour palette.
In this Montreal concert streamed online in November of 2024, Tommy Dupuis has a lot of fun using every once of possiblity available on this amazing guitar.
The Nutcracker Suite by P. Tchaikovsky (arr. A. York)
Being in Manuel Barrueco's class not only means learning a whole lot of things, it also gives the chance to play in this all-star group: the Barrueco Studio Ensemble.
This 2023 live performance was professionnaly recorded for the world renowned Baltimore Calssical Guitar Society. This talented ensemble made a Christmas gift to their audience with the famous Nutcracker Suite.
Sonata for Guitar, Allegro Moderato - Antonio José
This sonata was played on the first recital of his 2024 - 2025 tour in the Goodwin Hall in Baltimore. José was a good friend of Ravel and we can really hear the influence this had on José's writing; it sounds like an orchestra inside one guitar. Tommy Dupuis plays with this by recreating the colours of some of the instruments in the orchestra while embodying the mix of French and Spanish music.
Partita no.2, Allemande - J.-S. Bach, Transcription by Tommy Dupuis
In this 2024 recorded performance for the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, Tommy Dupuis offers his very own transcription of the Allemande from the second partita for violin.
While maintaining the baroque and Bach's stylistic, he brings fresh new ideas in his original transcription.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Harold Arlen
Here, Tommy Dupuis offers a gift to his audience in Carelton-sur-mer in 2024 during this encore with some Wizard of Oz music. He particularly enjoys reminding his audience that classical music does not always have to be about Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, and that the guitar can be a quite flexible instrument.
News Interview on CBC Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean
During his 2024-2025 tour, Tommy Dupuis was interviewed on CBC Tv of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean where he had the chance to discuss the meaning of his concert as well as his musician life. The CBC team also stayed for the concert to record some of it.
By Chants by Andrew York
Another perk of being in the highly talented Barrueco Studio Ensemble is having the chance of performing with some of the top artists in North America such as the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, a Grammy-winning ensemble. In this video, they perform By Chants, a piece inspired by a first nation melody.
